Reverend Jim Lawson was a WHITE minister from Ohio and resident of Nashville, Tennessee. Starting in the fall of 1959, he led many workshops for students of Historically Black Colleges and Universities teaching the methods of Non Violent protests.
February 1, 1960: 4 black male students from North Carolina A T & T sit at an all WHITE lunch counter in Woolworth's Drug Store in Greensboro, North Carolina. They ordered coffee. The store refused to serve them. They sat peacefully and the store closed early. They or other students repeat daily. Southern college students, many of whom attended Jim Lawson's Workshops, employ this new tactic throughout the South.
Ella Baker had leadership positions in the Civil Rights movement since 1937 and was the executive secretary of the Southern Christian Leadership Council. She organized a meeting in April 1960 at Shaw University for the leaders of the Student Sit-Ins and suggested that the Students form their own group: Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. She remained its "adult adviser" for many years.
SNCC sought to coordinate youth-led nonviolent direct action campaigns against segregation and other forms of racism. It played a major role in Sit-ins, Freedom Rides, and the 1963 March on Washington.
In 1967 SNCC changes the N from "NONVIOLENT" to "NATIONAL."
May 6, 1960 CIVIL RIGHTS ACT of 1960 established federal inspection of local voter registration polls. It expanded the CIVIL RIGHTS ACT of 1957 and provided federal penalties for those who interfered with a black's right to vote.
18 year old Cassius Clay won the Gold Medal at the Rome Olympics. He set the sports' world; and the whole world "a glow". Known as "The Louisville Lip" in reference to his brashness. He became the Heavy Weight Champion of the world. He converted to Islam and changed his name to Muhammed Ali in 1964. In 1966 he began a 5 year prison term rather than be drafted into the U S Army.

JFK will face the Cuban Missile Crises, support the invasion of Cuba at the Bay of Pigs and support School Busing to accelerate segregation. He announces that the America "will place a man on the moon" before the end of the decade.
JFK will be ASSASINATED IN 1963 and brother Bobby in 1968.
